28th MASSACHUSETTS MARKED ENFIELD RIFLE-MUSKET

PRICE   $  4,150.00

DESCRIPTION

An Enfield musket issued to the famed 28th Massachustetts Infantry. 577 caliber muzzleloading. Brass trigger guard, nosecap and buttplate. Lockplate marked "E.P. BOND / LONDON".  Barrel has standard Birmingham proofs at breech on left side of barrel. Tang of buttplate stamped "I  28TH MASS  81" which translates to Co. I, 28th Massachusetts Infantry and th 81 is either soldier's number on muster roll or a rack number.

The 28th Mass was raised in Boston and was part of the famed Irish Brigade commanded by Brig. Gen Thomas Francis Meagher.  Known for their distinctive Tiffany-embroidered green flag and Gaelic war cry, "Faugh a Ballagh" (Clear the Way), the Irishmen of the 28th Massachusetts saw action in most of the Union Army's major eastern theatre engagements – Antietam, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, the Overland Campaign, and the siege of Petersburg – and were present for Gen. Robert E. Lee's surrender to Gen. Ulysses S. Grant at Appomattox Court House.

This musket was almost certainly carried in combat during the greatest battles of the American Civil War.
