4th CORPS INFANTRY OFFICER'S FORAGE CAP

PRICE   $ ON HOLD

DESCRIPTION

An outstanding Civil War officer's forage cap with original cloth 4th corps badge, bullion hunting horn and company letter "E". Cap is an early war piece with interior crown marked "TOMES, SON & MELVAIN / 6 MAIDEN LANE / NEW YORK".  This firm was in business from 1859 until 1864.  The red cloth corps badge is original to the hat and indicates that it was worn by an officer in the 1st division of the 4th Army Corps. The bullion hunting horn and company letter are also original to the hat. The chinstrap is held in place with two eagle "I" buttons. Interior lining is complete as is the leather sweatband.

The IV Corps, Army of the Potomac, was created on March 13, 1862, and placed under the command of Erasmus D. Keyes. It consisted initially of three divisions, under Darius N. Couch, Silas Casey, and William F. "Baldy" Smith. Couch's division was transferred to join VI Corps during the Antietam Campaign and remained with them for the duration of the war. The corps' peak strength (in early 1862) was 37,000 men.

The corps took part in McClellan's Peninsula Campaign of 1862, playing a major role in repulsing Confederate attacks at Seven Pines and Malvern Hill. After the campaign the IV Corps remained on the Peninsula. The corps was attached to the Department of Virginia under John A. Dix and took part in diversionary actions against Richmond during the Gettysburg Campaign. The corps was officially discontinued on August 1, 1863

CONDITION

Cap is in excellent condition with solid stitching and no alterations or repairs. Liner is complete as is sweatband. One of the best Civil War officers caps I have seen.
