EARLY TYPE III FAYETTEVILLE RIFLE

EARLY TYPE III FAYETTEVILLE RIFLE

PRICE    $16,495.00

DESCRIPTION

A type III Fayetteville rifle dated 1862.  58 caliber, muzzloading. 33-inch barrel with bayonet lug secured by two brass barrel bands.

This is one of the earliest type III rifles being dated 1862, manufactured sometime between October and December of that year. The rifle has evolved into the standard production Fayetteville lockplate and distinct "S" hammer, while can still be considered transitional from the type II having an iron M1855 type nosecap. Lockplate is marked forward of hammer "FAYETTEVILLE" with an eagle over "CSA" at center and behind lock is "1862" date. Barrel marked on breech at left side with "VP" over eaglehead and top of barrel dated "1862". Brass buttplate stamped "CSA" forward of tang screw.  Walnut stock.

There are very few known 1862 dated Type III rifles with maybe 100 or fewer having been produced during the last 2 or 3 months of the year.

CONDITION

Very good - Fine condition especially for a Confederate firearm. All parts appear to be original to this gun.  Lock is crisply marked with an even gray color. Barrel is a smooth brown color with possibly some of the armory browning remaining,  markings are excellent, some scattered roughness to surface around bolster area. Wood has raised grain and with sharps edges. Brass is mostly bright with matching patina overall.  Bore is excellent. Mechanism is crisp and tight.
