DESCRIPTION

Type III Richmond Armory rifle-musket. 58 caliber, single shot muzzleloader conforming to the general configuration of the M1855 and M1861. Iron mounted with brass nosecap and buttplate. Manufactured early to mid 1863 based on the date stamp die being unbroken. Walnut stock with no cutout for Maynard primer. Lockplate marked forward of hammer "C.S / RICHMOND, VA" and vertically at rear of lock "1863" with rounded serifs on 6 and 3. Barrel is held in place with 3 bands all with offset "U".  Breech of barrel stamped "V P over eagle" and date on top of barrel flat. Sight is the correct Richmond made style with 300 and 500 yard leaf. A nice, original and complete Confederate Richmond musket.

CONDITION

    A nice condition gun with mostly smooth metal surfaces and strong markings on lockplate. The stock is Richmond with no channel for tape primer device, shows some wear and minor rounding of edges, good wood to metal fit. Metal surfaces have been lightly cleaned except for brass which has aged, deep patina. Lockplate is well marked with original internal parts. Barrel markings are light with only partial inspector stamp visible. Barrel date is mostly missing. Brass nosecap is attached with an iron screw. Barrel bands are products of the Richmond Armory with all having an offset "U". Ramrod is an original M1855 pattern without swell. This gun conforms to other known original and unaltered 1863, Type III Richmond Armory rifle-muskets.
