DESCRIPTION

A scarce Arsenal made 1851 pattern belt and eagle plate for enlisted personnel. The buckle is cast brass with integral wreath.  Reverse of buckle is marked "US/ALLEGHENY/ARSENAL". The eagle device is die stamped brass applied with solder. The nickel-silver wreath is of one piece construction with the tips of the wreath passing through a slot in the eagle's wings. Both buckle and keeper have matching benchmark "1725" on reverse. The belt is buff leather which has been dyed black as prescribed at the start of the Civil War.

This is an early belt and buckle which dates from the 1853 to 1860 period and based on the design of the eagle is possibly one from the first order placed with the Allegheny Arsenal for 10,000 buckles on March 17, 1853.

CONDITION

Excellent condition with buckle detail remaining sharp and crisp. Buckle and keeper have matched numbers. Belt is solid complete with leather keeper and the brass adjuster which is held in place with 3 small rivets.
