MINTY M1850 AMES STAFF & FIELD OFFICER SWORD
MINTY AMES STAFF & FIELD OFFICER SWORD
A regulation pattern 1850 staff and field officer's sword manufactured by Ames. The Ames Mfg. Co was the primary contractor for edged weapons for the US Ordnance Department prior to and during the Civil War. This example is considered the type II and based on blade etching and specifically the script "US" in the etching would indicate that the sword was manufactured sometime during 1863.
As can be seen with this superb specimen, Ames paid considerable attention to the fit and finish of their swords thus we are lucky enough to find examples in high grades of condition. This sword is in near mint condition with just minor loss of gilt on edges. The blue steel scabbard is brass mounted with maker stamps on obverse of top mount. The crisp blade etching contains firm name, foliate, US, and panapoly of arms. Charcoal color sharkskin grips is exceptional with original brass wire wrap.
Nearly as fine of condition Ames Staff sword as can be found.
Exceptional condition with nearly all of the blue remaining on steel scabbard . The mounts retain 90%+ gilt. The guard has bright gilt finish with only minor loss at top branch. Sharkskin grip remains in near new condition. Blade is factory bright with full frosty etching.
