PRICE $ 2,450.00
The Special Model 1861 Contract Rifle-Musket by Amoskeag Manufacturing Company of Manchester, New Hampshire. 58 caliber. Single shot muzzloader. 40-inch round barrel with three barrel bands. All iron mountings finished bright with case hardened lock and hammer. Rear sight blued. Lock marked "U. (eagle motif) S./AMOSKEAG Mfg. Co/MANCHESTER, N.H." 1863 date behind hammer. Barrel marked with "VP" and eaglehead with 1863 date on top of barrel forward of tang, bolster marked with eagle motif. Buttplate marked "U.S." Walnut stock with military inspector cartouche.
These muskets are all contract muskets based off the Colt design which copied the English Enfield musket design with S shaped hammer and bolster without cleanout screw. Amoskeag produced 27,001 of these muskets between 1862-65.
A high condition gun with much of the case color remaining on lock and hammer. Barrel is mostly bright with scattered surface spots of brown that would easily clean, no pitting is visible. Generally all of the stamps are near new, the "Amoskeag stamping on lock is weakly struck with address being the lightest part of the strike. The barrel marks are excellent. Wood has a few very minor bumps. Ramrod is the original. Bore is excellent and mechanism is like new.
