APPOMATTOX PAROLE FOR A MEMBER OF THE RICHMOND HOWITZERS

PRICE   $  3,650.00

DESCRIPTION

Appomattox parole of Charles Turner Palmer, 2nd Company, Richmond Howitzers, Cutshaw's Artillery Battalion. The pass printed on April 10th, 1865 and signed by Captain L.F. Jones of the 2nd Co. Richmond Howitzers.

The terms of the surrender allowed Confederate soldiers to be paroled and return home. During the April 10 meeting between Grant and Lee it was agreed each Confederate would be provided with an individual parole pass certifying that the men would not take up arms against the United States. Per Grant's instructions these passes could aid the former Confederates during their journey home, allowing them to use federal transportation or to draw food and supplies from federally controlled stations in the South. Approximately 30,000 blank passes were printed at the Clover Hill Tavern. After the Confederates surrendered their military equipment, they were eligible to receive the pass.

Charles T. Palmer mustered into the "2nd" Co. VA 2nd Co. Howitzers Light Artillery on June 26, 1861 and obviously surrendered with that unit at Appomattox. The Richmond Howitzers fought in the Army of Northern Virginia, participating in every major campaign of the army.

A scarce document given to a Confederate soldier at the surrender of Lee's army .
