DESCRIPTION

A Civil War issue forage or "bummers" cap with maker label and original cavalry insignia. This is the regulation pattern cap issued to enlisted personnel from 1861-65. Cap has dark blue wool body with leather bill and leather chinstrap which is held in place with cavalry eagle "C" buttons. Liner is of light brown polished cotton. Original paper makers label "J.S. / No. 3. / N.Y." which is most likely Julius Sheldon who had an army contract in 1864 for 50,000 army hats. Sweatband is brown leather. The cap has original cavalry crossed sabers, company letter "C" and regimental designation fro the 6th cavalry. Insignia has matching aged patina and looks to be original to the hat.

This is the iconic piece of Civil War headgear as worn by federal soldiers in every theater of the war.

CONDITION

Cap is in excellent condition. Original thread holds chinstrap buttons. Body shows little fading. Insignia is original. Liner is complete as is sweatband. Original maker label present.

An outstanding Civil War enlisted forage cap.
