ENLISTED MOUNTED  GREATCOAT

PRICE   $ 6,350.00

DESCRIPTION

A  Civil War cavalry enlisted issue greatcoat. Sky blue wool with coarse brown cotton liner and white cotton sleeve linings. The regulations for the mounted greatcoat called for a double breasted coat with fall down collar and cape coming down to the turned-up cuffs. This example has maker stamp in right sleeve "K.H. & Co / P" this is Kunkel, Hall & Co of Philadelphia. They had contracts for thousands of military uniforms during the war. I feel this is a fairly early war coat based on construction and also the lack of military or Cowles stamp in sleeve as seen in later war coats.

This coat was definitely issued and shows c0llar wear and sweat stains under arms also fading and wear on outer body. There is a really cool repair done by the soldier where the bottom of the interior pocket has worn through (see photos). There are also a couple of period stitched repairs that were almost certainly done at time of use. This coat along with two other Civil War coats was deaccessioned from a small museum in Pennsylvania in the 1970's.  There is a good amount of provenance with the coat which will be passed along to the purchaser.

CONDITION

Coat is complete and has had no restorations done. There are several buttons missing which could easily be replaced if desired. Wool body of coat shows some darkening from age and use in extreme weather conditions. The lining is fully intact. There are scattered moth nips on body and a couple of quarter size spots hidden under the cape. Alot of character here and unquestionably issued and worn in the field.
