COLT SINGLE ACTION ARTILLERY REVOLVER

PRICE    $4,150.00

DESCRIPTION

45 caliber, serial number 134000, 51/2 -inch barrel. Type I Colt factory refinished revolver with correct mismatched numbered parts. Trigger guard and backstrap are both from 1874 guns. Barrel is numbered 602 with "P" proof marks. Cylinder is not numbered but has "K" Colt stamp on reverse. Single line address is slightly weak along bottom edge from refinish process. Three line patent dates and "US" on frame along with serial number and "RAC" stamp. Left grip has worn 1901 cartouche and "RAC" stamp on butt.

The army needed large caliber revolvers to arm the troops for the Philippine Insurrection as the .38 caliber revolvers did not have the stopping power of the SAA's. This group of revolvers now with mismatched numbers, many having seen service in the field for 20 years or more, were sent to the Colt Factory from 1900-1903, disassembled and  refurbished with no regard for keeping matching numbered parts together, also if barrels were still in the original 7.5-inch configuration were cut to 5.5-inches, thus we have the artillery model.

CONDITION

A nice condition revolver with much of the case color remaining on frame, loading gate and hammer. Barrel retains approximately 30% Colt refinished blue. Trigger guard shows much blue. Grips have scattered dings and nicks with edge rounding, a partial 1901 cartouch remains. Cylinder has blue remaining in protected areas. Stampings are all easily legible. Mechanism is tight. Bore is good.
