D. MURRAY MARKED CONFEDERATE OFFICER'S SWORD

PRICE   $  18,500.00

DESCRIPTION

A Confederate officer's sword with etched blade and leather scabbard. The sword is patterned from the Leech & Rigdon style foot officer's hilt with "CS" in an oval on back of  guard. This example is almost certainly a product of James Conning of Mobile, Alabama. The blade, grip and scabbard are easily recognizable as Conning made products and it is known that this particular style guard was copied and produced by this firm. Both sides of blade feature a  double panel, frosted etching with vine and line patterns. At ricasso is inscribed "D. Murray / Mobile", believed to be the retail agent. There are several examples of edged weapons of the period known to have been marked by Murray and are considered extremely rare. Grip is of black leather that has worn to brown on the outer surfaces with thick, double strand twisted brass wire wrap. Scabbard is backstitched leather with brass mountings clearly of the Conning style.

CONDITION

A fine example of a Confederate foot officer's sword.  The grip and wire are original and both in very fine condition with just light wear to surface causing the black leather finish to fade. The etched blade is very good with an area of light pitting

at about mid point of blade. Etching is all visible with areas of fading. The brass hilt has an excellent aged patina. The leather scabbard is solid with original brass mounts and drag. The leather has some craquelure from age, stitching is solid.
