CONFEDERATE WOOD CANTEEN WITH STRAP & SPOUT
CONFEDERATE WOOD CANTEEN WITH STRAP AND SPOUT
An original Confederate manufactured cedar wood canteen with the original ticking shoulder strap and scarce screw-in pewter spout. This canteen is pictured on page 27 of "CIVIL WAR CANTEENS" by Sylvia & O'Donnell. Their write up states "Wood drum canteen, 7 1/4 inches by 2 1/8 inches with iron bands and shaped iron loops secured by grooves cut into the slats. Raised lathe teates dominate both faces. It has a cotton ticking sling. Except for its threaded pewter spout this specimen is a typical CS wooden canteen. We have scant information about these spouts although enough have survived, including an excavated specimen to assume a limited production of at least 100. It may be the work of a CS armory reconditioning discarded canteens with new spouts."
The excavated pewter spout pictured beside the canteen is included with the canteen.
It is hard enough to find a Confederate canteen with the sling or the spout but to find one with both and the added bonus of being pictured in the reference book is almost impossible. An exceptional example.
Canteen is in excellent and original condition with no repairs or alterations. The strap has one weak spot but nothing that will be easily broken. The spout is secure and has not been altered or repaired. The excavated spout is in very good condition with all the threads intact.
