RARE ORIGINAL CONFEDERATE LIMBER CHEST

PRICE   $  9,500.00

DESCRIPTION

One of a very small handful of Confederate made and used artillery limber chests. This example is made of southern white pine with a sheet zinc cover on lid. Iron handles, kick plate and corner brackets.

The box has an excellent history having been recovered in 2010 from an 18th century barn near  Amelia County Virginia, part of the Army of Northern Virginia retreat route from Petersburg towards Appomattox. The chest was one of 3 left at the tobacco farm of Quartermaster Sgt. Robert C. Osborne of the 12th Virginia Infantry. All three chests were originally filled with CS military documents and currency which at the time of their recovery was no longer present.

An article detailing the discovery of the chests was published in Vol. 34 No. 6/2010 North South Trader magazine. The chest is accompanied by a large binder of research and historical reference regarding the chest.

CONDITION

A very good example with the majority of the original blue-green paint remaining on exterior wood. The sheet zinc top is compete and intact showing many years of oxidation.  The interior dividing slats are present but the wood dividing panels are no longer present.  The iron limber attachment brackets are missing on exterior.  There are several areas, mostly on bottom panel, of rodent damage which does not affect the integrity of the chest.
