CONFEDERATE ARTILLERY SABER

PRICE   $  7,795.00

DESCRIPTION

An exceptional example of the Confederate 1840 pattern light artillery saber. The saber is copied from the US model 1840 type I artillery saber with highly curved blade and scabbard that fits into a recess at base of guard. The sword blade has a single fuller with noticeable flaws and finishing marks running entire length. Brass guard with Froelich style pommel cap also shows finishing and file marks. Grips is oilcloth with a single strand of iron wire wrap.  Scabbard has soldered lap seam with heavy brass mounts similar to those seen on Haiman scabbards. The iron drag is very similar in design to the Kenansville cavalry sabers and the red lacquer finish is seen on basically all iron scabbards made by Froelich.

Based on many traits commmon to known L. Froelich swords I believe that this is a product of his manufactory at Kenansville, NC.

CONDITION

An outstanding and nearly mint condition Confederate artillery saber. The oilcloth grip is excellent with only minor wear and one small chip missing. Guard has deep red brass patina showing file and finishing marks. The blade is still mostly bright with evident flaws and tooling marks, a few scattered very minor nicks to edge. Scabbard is excellent with 90% of the original lacquer remaining and no major dents evident.

About as good as can be found.
