OUTSTANDING GRISWOLD REVOLVER & HOLSTER

PRICE    $26,500.00

DESCRIPTION

A Confederate contract second model Griswold revolver with brass frame of the Colt M1851 Navy type. 36 caliber, six shot round cylinder with six stop slots and cylinder pins. 7.5-inch barrel. Wedge made without spring. One piece walnut grips, blued finish with brass frame and grip strap. Serial number 1978 located on cylinder and right side of barrel and frame. Secondary number "28" located on wedge and loading lever. Barrel stamped with "H" behind loading lever catch and also below serial number on barrel. Interior parts stamped with Roman numeral "III".  Holster is almost certainly the one this gun was issued with and has distinct impressions where this gun has sat in it for many years. The holster has had some hand tooling done and the initials "WGW" neatly impressed at top of flap.

This gun is listed by serial number in the 1963 reference "CONFEDERATE HANDGUNS" by Albaugh & Benet .

Samuel Griswold set up his shop in Griswoldville, GA and was able to produce about 3,700 of these high quality revolvers for the Confederacy starting in 1862 until the factory was destroyed by Union forces in November of 1864. The epitome of Confederate handguns.

CONDITION

An outstanding Confederate revolver. All matching and correct numbers and letters as known on similar examples.  Barrel is smooth with the thin blued finish turned brown, some stronger blue remains in loading lever well. Barrel and cylinder exhibit a distinct twist. Brass parts are  in excellent condition with tight fit and untouched color. Cylinder has all pins intact and prominent.  Wood grips are very  fine. Revolver overall shows the minor expected casting flaws and crudeness of finish. All screws and other parts both major and minor are original.

Holster is black finished leather with heavy  stitching. Flap closure loop is missing and appears to have been purposely removed. Muzzle end of holster is reinforced with double thickness of leather and the original end plug is intact. There has been some hand tooling done at some point in time. There is a single, narrow belt loop on reverse which is held in place with a large, crude brass rivet.

Truly an exceptional and fresh to the market Griswold revolver with holster.
