IDENTIFIED MODEL 1858 CANTEEN

PRICE   $  475.00

DESCRIPTION

The model 1858 smooth side canteen with brown wool cover, cotton strap and pewter spout. The name "J Killoren" is written in period ink on strap. This will be John Killoren of the 2nd Wisconsin Cavalry.  Killoren enlisted in October of 1863 and was with the regiment until June of 1865 when he was listed as a deserter just a little more than 3-months before the regiment was mustered out of service. The 2nd Wisconsin Cavalry was mostly in Mississippi with Grierson and in Arkansas during Killoren's service.

The ID looks good on this one and interestingly the strap has been shortened and tied off which would definitely indicate use by a cavalryman.

CONDITION

Cover has dust and dirt from years of storage, it is complete and stitching is solid. Strap has been broken and tied. Stopper is present along with the chain. Both sides of body of canteen are dented.  ID looks commensurate with age of canteen.
