DESCRIPTION

A Model 1851 pattern sword belt with both hangers and stenciled identification. The stencil reads "JOHN C. CARKIN/Co. F 1st N.H.C".  Brass eagle buckle with German silver wreath has matching number to keeper.  Belt is of buff leather as are both the original hangers.

Carkin was a member of the 16th New Hampshire infantry from mid 1862 until August of 1863 when the regiment mustered out. He was briefly in a light artillery regiment then joined the 1st NHC if March of 1865 and served until the regiment was mustered out. At this late stage of the war the 1st NH Cavalry spent most of its time chasing Mosby and with General Sheridan's command.

Even though Carkin didn't see much time with the cavalry it is nice to see a belt that you know was actually issued to a cavalry trooper.

CONDITION

A complete and original Civil War  sword belt with both hangers. The leather is still very strong and will display  fine on a mannequin. Overall condition is very good with matched buckle and keeper.
