MODEL 1858 INFANTRY HAT

PRICE   $  2,850.00

DESCRIPTION

A  Model 1858 Army hat (Hardee) for enlisted infantry.  The 1858 hat was modeled on the 1855 pattern cavalry enlisted hat. The regulations called for the hat to have a worsted cord in the branch of service color with tasseled ends, yellow brass insignia including branch of service and regimental designations. The side of the brim was pinned up with an eagle device and calling for mounted troops hats pinned on the right side and dismounted to be pinned on the left. The hats were made of black felt stiffened with a shellac/alcohol solution. Enlisted hats were to be adorned with a single ostrich feather.

This example is for an infantry soldier of company H, 7th regiment. It is complete with all insignia, ostrich feather and sky blue worsted cord. The interior label has a gilt eagle and Army logo and size.

CONDITION

Cap is in good condition and displays very well. The felt is still strong having only a couple of creased areas on brim. The sweatband is missing. There is a separation about an 1.5-inches long at top right edge of crown and a small chip out of brim on back side. The insignia is original, the eagle device looks to be one of the Bannerman surplus pieces.
