DESCRIPTION

A Type I J.P. Murray Rifle made in Columbus Georgia by the firm of Greenwood & Gray. Patterned on the Mississippi rifle with brass barrel bands, trigger guard and buttplate. 58 caliber muzzleloading with 33 inch barrel. Single fixed type rear sight with small brass blade front sight. Serial number "29" found inside lockplate, on hammer and bottom of barrel. The Nathanial Cross "Windmill" inspection stamp is also located on bottom of barrel. Various other Roman numeral assembly marks are found internally. Lockplate is marked forward of hammer "J.P. MURRAY/COLUMBUS GA"

An unknown number of JP Murray rifles were manufactured between 1862-64 with the Mississippi type considered the earliest production. Murray also produced carbines and had a contract with the State of Alabama in 1864 for rifles and carbines.

CONDITION

    Gun appears original, authentic and complete with no obvious restoration. Markings are crisp. Barrel has areas of pitting mostly at breech with the balance gray. Brass has a well aged patina. Stock is sound with hand worn patina. Bore is smooth with no rifling evident..  Mechanically functional.
