KENANSVILLE D-GUARD KNIFE

DESCRIPTION

This Confederate D-guard knife/cutlass was manufactured by Louis Froelich's firm the Confederate States Armory of both Wilmington, NC to 1863 and then at Kenansville, NC. The knife is a variant pattern with the grip made of two wood  slabs held in place with 3 iron pins. 1-inch wide iron guard tapering at quillon. Double edged blade measuring 19.5-inches.The knife is in attic untouched condition with the blade still holding a very sharp edge.

A nearly identical example shown on page 85 of "Confederate Bowie Knives".

CONDITION

    Untouched condition. Blade has deep brown patina with some surface rough areas. Grip has a sliver missing on right side, otherwise very good with patina. Iron guard is about the same condition as blade with deep patina and areas of surface roughness.
