LEECH & RIGDON OFFICER'S SWORD
PRICE $ 10,250.00
A Leech & Rigdon style foot officer's sword with "CS" on rear face of guard. Leather grip and heavy brass wire wrap. Brass guard and pommel of the L & R pattern with CS in an oval on rear of face. Blade is etched with vines and foliate pattern with a 5-pointed star as central decoration on obverse, possibly indicating Texas or Mississippi officer's use. Leather scabbard with brass mounts and drag. It is well known that this style sword was copied by other Confederate manufacturers and this example was almost certainly made by James Conning in Mobile, AL. The blade etching is much more similar to the Conning style than Leech & Rigdon and the scabbard is a typical pattern of Conning. Provenance: ex Kevin Hoffman collection. A Southern officer's sword with much eye appeal including an extremely attractive blade etching.
A very good condition sword with original leather grip and wire. Blade etching is light but all easily visible. Brass scabbard mountings are correct type as is drag. It appears that some leather shrinkage has occured over the years and now is is about 1/4-inch shorter at the point where drag meets leather.
