LOUISIANA BOWIE KNIFE

PRICE   $  4,500.00

DESCRIPTION

A rare Sheffield Bowie with Louisiana state seal decorated pommels. 14-inch overall length with 9.5-inch clip point blade. Ricasso stamped "PARKIN & MARSHALL / SHEFFIELD". Dark horn grip held by two pins. German silver mounts with coffin shaped pommel decorated with Pelican feeding her young with 7 stars above. Gilt embossed red leather sheath with German silver mounts.

It is believed that these knives were sent for sale to Louisiana prior to the succession of Virginia based on the 7 stars above Louisiana motto. Wm Albaugh shows images in "A PHOTOGRAPHIC SUPPLEMENT OF CONFEDERATE SWORDS" of three similar examples with one having been taken from the body of an officer of Taylor's Brigade at Winchester, VA in 1862 and an excavated specimen recovered at Ft. Donelson.

CONDITION

Very good overall condition. Horn grip has a pair of minor chips on left side at pommel. Blade is full length with some darkening and minor scattered pitting. Sheath is very good with minor scuffing and denting to drag.
