CONFEDERATE MENDENHALL, JONES & GARDNER RIFLE

DESCRIPTION

A Type II Mendenhall, Jones & Gardner rifle manufactured in  Guilford County , North Carolina on contract to the state. .577 caliber, single shot muzzeloading with 33 inch barrel. Mississippi type lockplate stamped ahead of hammer "M.J. & G. / N.C" and vertically  behind hammer "C.S.". Interior of lockplate serial numbered "833".  Top of barrel has inspection stamp "NC / P" which is partially obscured by pitting.  Straight iron buttplate.  Two piece brass trigger guard. Brass barrel bands with "U" stamp pointing forward on top of each. Brass 1855 style nosecap.  1855 type bayonet lug mounted 3 inches back from end of barrel stamped "3". Small brass blade front sight and iron single notched rear sight. Replacement tulip head ramrod. Reddish color straight grain walnut stock has sharp, high comb with cartouche  "M.J. & G." in a rectangle opposite the lock.  This exact gun is pictured on page 54 of "ARMING THE GLORIOUS CAUSE" by Whisker.

An early rifle without date on lock indicating late 1862 manufacture.

The firm of  Mendenhall, Jones & Gardner had significant contracts with the state of North Carolina from 1862 -64 with known deliveries of 2239 recorded. Although the company produced a substantial number of rifles survival rate is minimal and are considered rare in any condition.

CONDITION

    Very good condition for an early date Confederate longarm. Barrel has scattered dings and light pitting, some moderate pitting in are of bolster which has partially obscured barrel markings. Straight iron buttplate shows moderate pitting. Lockplate is smooth with very good markings. Wood is good with use wear and marks. A fracture in the wood has occurred on flat opposite lock and has been repaired keeping the the original piece of wood intact, the cartouche is still visible. Brass parts are in good condition with an even, aged brass patina. Rear sling swivel is broken. Mechanism is fully functioning and rifling is good.
