A Civil War Merrill Rifle SN 6810. Made by James H. Merrill, Baltimore, Maryland. Approximately 800 rifles manufactured between 1862-65 in serial range 5000 to 14000. 54 caliber breechloading with brass patchbox and barrel bands. Both lockplate and lever marked "J.H. MERRILL BALTO. / PAT. JULY 1858 / APL. 9 MAY 21-28-61". Assembly numer "33" visible on lid of patchbox and inside of trigger guard.
Known issues to21st Indiana, 7th & 10th Mich, 4th Ark & 1st Mass.
A very good representative example of a scarce gun at an affordable price.
Overall good condition with all original parts with the exception of the ramrod. Lockplate shows moderate pitting with markings partially obliterated.. Moderate pitting in breech area with barrel showing lighter pitting. Mechanism and lever are fully functioning. Bore is very good. Re-oiled wood has various small dings and bruises with a hairline crack opposite lock at wrist area.
