DESCRIPTION

A Major General McClellan-War of 1861 ID disk having belonged to Lt. Milton Shattuck and also an ink ID'ed CDV of Shattuck as a Lt. in the 14th Mass Infantry Regiment. The inscription on the disk reads "Lt. M.B. SHATTUCK / Co A / 14th MASS. VOL."  You rarely see an officer's ID disk.

 

Lt. Milton B. Shattuck

Residence Ipswich MA; a 32 year-old Track Repairer.

On 7/5/1861 he was commissioned as a 1st Lieutenant into "A" Co. 14th MASS REG.

In early 1862 the 14th was designated the 1st Mass Heavy Artillery.

He Resigned on 1/20/1863

On 10/20/1863 he mustered into "G" Co. MA 3rd Heavy Artillery

He was Mustered Out on 9/18/1865 at Washington, DC

Promotions:  Sergt 10/20/1863 (As of Co. G 3rd MA Heavy Artillery)

The 1st Regiment of Massachusetts Volunteer Heavy Artillery was a unit that served in the Union Army during the American Civil War. It was originally raised as the 14th Regiment Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry. The unit garrisoned forts around Washington and were detailed for various activities associated with the defenses of the capitol. The 3rd MA Heavy Artillery manned the coastal defenses of Massachusetts and were sent to Washington in 1864 to man the forts there.

CONDITION

  Brass disk has deeply aged patina. The ID is deeply struck and is shadowed on front of disk. Image has been cropped to fit an ablum. Ink ID is period.
