INSCRIBED BATTLE DAMAGED COLT REVOLVER

PRICE   $  4,750.00

DESCRIPTION

A Model 1860 Colt Army Revolver , SN 46786, manufactured in 1862.  44 caliber, six shot cylinder with8-inch round barrel.  One piece oiled walnut grips. Brass trigger guard and iron backstrap. Barrel marked "-ADDRESS COL. SAML COLT NEW-YORK U.S. AMERICA-". Frame marked on left side "COLTS / PATENT". Cylinder with roll engraved scene.

This revolver belonged to Sgt. Richard F. Newcomb of Co. A, 52nd Mass Infantry. The 52nd was part of the Army of the Gulf and was present during the Siege of Port Hudson, La, 48 days of continuous fighting and the longest siege in US military history to that point. The Confederate garrison surrendered on July 9, 1863 , just days after the capitulation of Vicksburg.

The revolver has two chambers of the cylinder blown out and it is almost a certainty that Sgt. Newcomb was carrying the weapon and fired its last shot on the last day of resistance at Port Hudson. Newcomb had his name"R. F. NEWCOMB" engraved on the trigger guard strap and "Port Hudson July 8th. 1863." Sgt Newcomb obviously carried the pistol home as a souvenir of the battle and his service during the war.

Not often does a battle damaged revolver turn up but to know the owner, battle and date is almost unheard of. A true rarity in the field of Civil War collecting.

CONDITION

Very good overall condition with all original parts. All serial numbers match including wedge. Engraving is original and correct to the period. Cylinder is obviously severely damaged. The cylinder stop is loose where the cylinder sits in blown position, otherwise functions properly. Metal parts are light brown and mostly smooth with some light peppering to right side of barrel. Brass has aged patina. Front sight is missing.
