DESCRIPTION

An 1842 pattern single shot pistol for the State of South Carolina and assembled by The Palmetto Armory of Columbia, SC.  William Glaze, owner of the Palmetto Armory,  procured a contract with the state to supply Muskets, rifles, pistols and swords in 1851. The pistols are believed to have mostly been made up from parts purchased from Aston and Johnson then assembled and marked at the Armory.

54 caliber smoothbore, 8.5 inch barrel with brass blade front sight and brass mountings. Swivel type ramrod.  Lockplate marked ahead of hammer in circular design "PALMETTO ARMORY . S*C." with palmetto tree within the center. Lock marked vertically rear of hammer "COLUMBIA/S.C. 1852".  Marked at breech of barrel "V P "above a palmetto tree motif. Side of breech marked WM. GLAZE & CO." Barrel tang marked 1853.  All marks conform to the known authentic examples. From the esteemed Dr. Fred Novy collection of Palmetto firearms.

The Palmetto arms are considered Confederate weapons and most southern Civil War gun collections will have examples.
