COLT REVOLVER PRESENTED TO A CIVIL WAR KENTUCKY CONGRESSMAN

PRICE   $  4,450.00

DESCRIPTION

A M1849 Colt revolver with presentation to Kentucky Congressman and ardent abolitionist William Harrison Randall.

Revolver is the standard model with 5-inch barrel. Serial number 151584, manufactured in early 1859. Revolver is housed in an original walnut Colt case with accessories.  5-shot, 31 caliber with iron backstrap and trigger guard.

A large coin silver presentation plaque adorns the left grip of the revolver which reads "PRESENTED TO / Wm H Ranadall / by his Friends / Philada  Nov 17th 1858".  Based on the early 1859 date of gun and the late 1858 date of the inscription I would guess that the date signifies some, unknown to me, event that Randall was involved in that was worthy of presentation of a pistol.

William Harrison Randall was born is 1812  near Richmond, Ky. He started practicing law in 1835 in Laurel County. Ky and became clerk of the circuit court from 1836 to 1844. He was elected to the House of Representatives from 1863 to 1867 from Kentucky's 8th district as an Unconditional Unionist candidate.  The state’s Unconditional Unionist minority formed the nucleus of the fledgling Kentucky Republican Party, which had scant support statewide.  The four Unconditional Unionist representatives from Kentucky voted in favor of the 13th amendment to end slavery. The amendment was passed on April 8, 1864, although, the Kentucky General Assembly rejected the 13th Amendment and by this time slavery survived only in Delaware and Kentucky.

Randall went on to become a Kentucky district judge throughout the 1870's. He died in 1881 and is buried near London, Ky.
