MARCUS RENO'S WEST POINT DIPLOMA

PRICE   $ 5,25000

DESCRIPTION

The West Point Diploma of Marcus A. Reno, an officer in Civil War , Indian Wars and most importantly playing a prominent role as  Major of the 7th US Cavalry under Custer at  the battle Little Bighorn.

Reno, from  Carrollton, IL, graduated from West Point in 1857. He was assigned to 1st US Dragoons (1st US Cavalry) with early service in the West. At the outbreak of the Civil War the 1st Cavalry was transferred to the Eastern Theater where they participated in engagements including Antietam, Kelly's Ford, Trevilian Station, 3rd Winchester, Cedar Creek and actions against Mosby.  By 1866 Reno was on duty in the West, promoted to Major in 1868 and in 1871 joined the 7th Cavalry.

Reno is most well known for the role he played at the Battle of Little Bighorn where he commanded three troops of cavalry. 268 men, including Custer, were massacred by an overwhelming number of Sioux warriors at the battle.  Major Reno received severe criticism for his actions during the battle and a court of inquiry was convened to review charges leveled against him. Reno was exonerated  of the charges although the allegations continued to follow him until his death in 1889. He is interred at the Little Bighorn Battlefield.

The document is a standard West Point diploma of the period.  Interestingly, this is a copy requested and supplied to Reno in July 1858, one year after his graduation. One would guess that his original diploma was lost or destroyed during the previous year.  The diploma is signed by a West Point adjutant officer as being a correct copy and is dated July 13, 1858.
