S & K 1847 CONTRACT CAVALRY SABER

PRICE   $  895.00

DESCRIPTION

A Model 1840 heavy cavalry saber dated 1847. Manufactured by Schintzler & Kirschbaum (S&K), Solingen Germany, under a US Government contract.  Apparently the Federal Governments primary contractor, Ames Mfg Co., was not able to meet the demand for the 1840 model cavalry sabers at the height of the Mexican war, thus the Ordnance Dept. contracted with S&K for 1,000 cavalry sabers in May of 1847. These 1847 contract sabers are easily identifiable being marked on the spine of the blade "crown/FW/47/crown G", the ricasso  stamped "S&K" and "crown G" on brass knucklebow . The steel scabbard has a single rivet at throat on reverse side and is marked on drag "G /47 /S&K".

A cavalry saber ordered by the US Government specifically for arming troops during the Mexican War.

CONDITION

An original sword with all correct markings on sword and scabbard.  Leather grip is 85%+ intact. Grip wire is original but appears to be missing about 1/2 a turn at front of grip. Blade is mostly smooth with one area of light pitting at tip. Color is light gray with some darker areas. Edge of blade has a few scattered nicks. Scabbard is an even brown color with a few small dings from use. Markings on drag are clearly visible.
