IDENTIFIED EARLY WAR CAPTAIN'S FROCK COAT
IDENTIFIED EARLY WAR CAPTAIN'S COAT
PRICE $ 4,595.00
A Civil War officer's frock coat for captain of Infantry. Identified to Capt. William H. Shuman, Co. I, 178th PA Vols.
The coat is of fairly straight forward regulation pattern with 9-button front, wide elbows and functional cuffs, long skirt, polished cotton lining with padded chest and early high collar. The infantry shoulder boards are certainly a local tailor or homemade product consisting of a backing of sky blue velvet with gilt tape border and captain bars. All of the buttons look to be original to the coat with original thread. The coat size staff buttons are "Extra Quality" marked and the cuff buttons are Scoville's. The coat is well identified with "SHUMAN" written in ink on back of hanger tab along with an note written by a daughter or granddaughter stating "Father Shumans coat he whare [sic] when he was Captain of the Home Guards of Brownsville Pa, Emma".
The 178th PA was a 9 month regiment mustered into service in October 1862 and mustered out in July of 1863. The regiment saw minor actions in early 1863 at Bottom's Bridge and along the Chickahominy River before returning to Washington to man defensive positions there.
The coat is accompanied by a good amount of research and has resided in a collection for the last 15 years or so. A truly identified and early Civil War officer's frock coat with a very fair price tag.
A complete and untouched officer's frock coat with original buttons and straps. The liner is in good condition showing expected wear from field use. There are no major moth holes but the coat body does have some tracking in the wool nap. The inked name inside coat is light but readable. Displays very well.
