SOLID CAST "REGULATION" CS BELT PLATE

SOLD

DESCRIPTION

An very scarce non-excavated solid cast "regulation" style oval CS waist belt plate. A Western theater plate copied from the die-struck CS regulation pattern and most likely an early war piece. Sand cast brass with very good detail. Face and reverse clearly show the impression left by the sand casting process. All three hooks are intact.  A tag on the reverse states that this buckle was part of the Richard D. Stuart collection and is pictured on page 177 of "CONFEDERATE ARMS" by Albaugh & Simmons, published in 1957 (the first reference book my father purchased for me many years ago).  Brass has a beautiful naturally aged patina.

This buckle is similar to Plate 146 in "CONFEDERATE BELT BUCKLES & PLA TES, Expanded Edition" by  Mullinax and rates a rarity of 9.

Definitely one of only a very small handful known.
