DESCRIPTION

A Model 1860 Spencer carbine serial number 46109. 52 caliber rimfire, seven shot repeater loaded by magazine tube fitted through buttstock. Iron mountings with casehardened receiver, buttplate and barrel bands. 22-inch blued barrel with 6-groove rifling. Walnut stock. Marked on top of frame "SPENCER REPEATING/RIFLE CO. BOSTON, MASS/PAT'D MARCH 6, 1860", serial number located at rear of frame. Approximately 50,000 manufactured during the war with serial numbers starting at 11000 and ending at 61000.

The Spencer was a giant leap forward in firearm technology and received the personal endorsement of President Lincoln. By the end of the war the Spencer was the primary US cavalry arm.

CONDITION

    Original Civil War configuration. All parts are original to the gun. Mechanism is fully functioning. Rifling is prominent. Markings are very good compared to most Spencer's. Stock, with 2 military inspection cartouches, has expected minor dings and bruises. Frame has trace case color and is mostly smooth with good markings. Barrel has an area of light pitting forward of mid point, mostly limited to right side, the balance is mostly smooth.

Overall an above average gun with an appealing look.
