MODEL 1860 SPENCER MILITARY RIFLE

PRICE   $  3,595.00

DESCRIPTION

Made by Spencer Repeating Rifle Company, Boston, MA .  52 caliber rimfire (56-56). 1863-64 manufacture date.  30 inch barrel with front sight doubling as a bayonet lug. Standard unaltered M1860 six groove rifling. Blued barrel with case hardened receiver, buttplate and barrel bands. Walnut stocks. Standard magazine without knurling on knob.

Usual markings on top of frame "SPENCER REPEATING/ RIFLE CO. BOSTON, MASS./PAT'D MARCH 6, 1860". Serial Number 22846 located at rear of frame.  Military cartouches located on left side of stock.

One of the most popular of Civil War longarms receiving a personal endorsement from Lincoln. Spencer rifles were used by Custer's 5th Michigan at Gettysburg and many other famous regiments.

CONDITION

An original and unaltered M1860 Civil War issued Spencer rifle.  Metal has a mostly smooth, even brown patina with receiver showing a more mottled color. Wood shows minor bumps and bruises from being carried during the war. There appears to have been a small plaque mounted just behind tang which is now missing and a previous owner has initialed the left side of stock (I have information on who the rifle is attributed to).  All markings on metal are legible and both military cartouches are visible. Mechanism is tight. Bore has good rifling but is dirty.
