DESCRIPTION

A M1841 percussion rifle (Mississippi rifle) manufactured in 1847 by George W. Tryon of Philadelphia, PA. Tryon produced approximately 5,000 rifles on contract to the Federal government between 1846-1847. This example was also put into service during the Civil War and has the New York state alteration done by F.H. Grosz which consisted of turning the end of the barrel down and a bayonet stud added for use with the Model 1842 type socket bayonet, also barrel was re-rifled to 58 caliber. All of these conversions were delivered by December 1861 with known issues to the 7th, 10th, 12th and 192nd New York regiments.

58 caliber percussion with brass barrel bands, trigger guard, buttplate and patchbox. Walnut stock with two military cartouches. Numbered 291 on buttplate and barrel.  Lock markings "TRYON/US" and behind hammer "PHILADA / PA / 1847.  Barrel marked at tang with 1847 date and left side at breech  "US/JH/P".

A famed Mississippi from a desirable maker with association to both the Mexican War and use in the Civil War.

CONDITION

    Gun is in good condition with all original parts. Barrel is mostly smooth with brown patina. Markings are clear with part of the barrel date obscured. Brass has deep, rich patina. Ramrod is the original one supplied at time of Grosz conversion. Stock shows scattered bumps and bruises with one hairline crack above lock screw on left side. Cartouches are easily visible. Rifling is present. Mechanism is fully funcitioning.
